Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, is an R and B artist based from Canada, who is known for his melancholic sound. Being a 17 year old from Toronto, Tesfaye was homeless, jumping from couch to couch. This was until he released three mixtapes, which he later put as a one whole album that propelled him into stardom. Since then, he has worked with some of the most prolific figures in music such as Kanye West to Beyoncé. He has opened at such events such as Coachella and Govenor’s Ball, and even performed at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. His memorizing voice is often accompanied with dark and moody production. He often speaks on the trappings of love and relationships, often calling the “pointless” or “sh*t”. So if his music is s moody and sometimes downright depressing, why do so many people including myself listen to him? To put it as plainly, it just sounds really good. His voice has often been compared to the likes of Michael Jackson.( he has even done his own version of Dirty Diana, which critics say is a faithful rendition.) He has a very intimate sound, but does not come off as arrogant or condescending. Even if you have never a fraction of the illicit drugs he sings about, he invites you to see what it is like. Some people claim he glamorizes the lifestyle and encourages his fans to do the same, but that is just an inane claim. If everyone followed that same logic, most pieces of media would not exist. With this post as well the logs to come, I hope to paint the picture of what The Weeknd means to me and how his discography is one of the most prolific in music today. I will be going to each of his major releases, talking about what they are, his head-space at the time and generally my thoughts on them. Who knows, by the end of it you might yourself a fan of him if you are not already.
